Padmasana in Sirsasana

So, lately I’ve really been focusing on my Electric Yoga line and the STRESS level has been unbelievable! Add my Bisou Bisou line with JC Penney, seven kids, and a very supportive yet intense husband to the mix and I just want to headstand all day! If blood is going to be rushing to my head, I’d rather it be with the benefits of strength, balance, and illness combative. Don’t get me wrong, I am very very blessed and grateful for my life; but thank goodness for my yoga practice… whew!

It’s important to understand the breakdown of these sanskrit words (I am still brushing up on mine), Sirsasana refers to “head stand”. Padmasana refers to the lotus sitting position. So, this pose is Padmasana in Sirsansana. Boom, super straight forward; you are standing on your head in a seated position with legs crossed.

Inverted poses are useful for treating illness and they have numerous overall positive effects on the body, specifically the abdominal organs. Head stand poses improve balance and strength specific to the core. Once you find your equilibrium within this pose it is so important to focus on breathing into the hips and focus on increasing the strength within your thoracic cavity. A strong core is the foundation of a healthy body. All the muscles, bones, and ligaments surrounding the core need to be strong so they can protect your vital organs.

When you feel the stress start to build up and you need a release, I promise a head stand will help you re-evalutate and refocus your intentions. It’s sort of like an apple, a head stand a day will keep the doctor a way. Happy Inverting!

Namaste,

Part 2: Equinox & Electric Yoga deepExtreme SOHO, NY

The last time we caught up with Tara, she had just finished setting up for our launch trunk show for Electric Yoga and co-sponsorship event with Equinox to introduce their new class, deepExtreme….

Tara recaps…..

I couldn’t sleep that night. I think it was the combination of the jet lag, free-flowing Rosé at the Winston the night before, and the excitement to do well for our brand the next day. ”Ring! Ring! Ring!”, I picked up the phone, and glanced at the clock: 7:00 am. ”Ms. Gregory, this is your wake up call!”. It was GO time. After a much needed 30 minute meditation to: Relax – Buddhist Meditation Music – Zen Garden – Kokin Gumi, I hopped in the shower, threw on my Electric Yoga Gray Bolt Crop Pants, Seamless Racer Tank and Bright Yellow Ultra-LIght Jacket and I was on my way back downtown to facilitate our trunk show, get some great feedback from Editors and customers, and take the deep Extreme class I’d been hearing so much about.

Phase one:electric-yoga.com on all Equinet Computers.

electric-yoga.com on all Equinet Computers.

Finishing touches and set-up SHOP for Success

After switching all the Equinet Computers to our electric-yoga.com Web Site I put last minute finishing merchandising touches on our Electric Yoga display in the SHOP.
I took a 15 minute banana and oatmeal break I had picked up from Starbucks on the way, and talked to Kristin (our Bollare PR girl) for a few minutes as Editors and some other Equinox members filed into the gym.
We brought a few of our beautiful BOLT BAGS as gifts for some of the staff and Editors, filled with our Spring and Summer Lookbooks.

Phase two:

Around 9 am our meet and greet winded down and it was time for some deep Extreme.

Everyone was instructed to place Yoga Mats on the floor and begin breathing together in and out. After a few simple Yoga and non-Yoga poses, such as squatting in place and holding, or variation of Vinyasa into holding plank, interim swinging movements from side to side, up and down with arms and core ensued.
Basically, we would work our way into simple poses and would hold them, and get deeper and deeper, and then add a dynamic aspect to the move. Squatting and kicking upward, side to side shuffling and letting head and shoulders go, with an added arm swing; would always end in a deep Extreme position.
After 45 minutes of these repetitive motions, we stretched well and ended in Shavasana; flat on our backs breathing in and out at our own pace and reflecting on everything or nothing at all.
As the class ended I felt very FULFILLED. There was this perfect fusion of core cardio, yoga, dance, and almost a tae-bo meets kickboxing element. I usually do yoga about 2 times a week and offset with Wushu (Martial Arts), running, or some sort of cross training. I felt like this class was the perfect fusion of all those rolled into an hour long class.

We sent our Marketing girl, Tara out to New York for our launch trunk show for Electric Yoga and co-sponsorship event with Equinox to introduce their new class, deepExtreme….

Tara recaps…..

I was excited to see that skyline again. It was 6:00 am in the morning and I was ready for the task at hand. As I landed at the JFK airport to set up for our Electric Yoga trunk show at the Equinox in SOHO, New York, NY; I had no idea that every inch of my body would “hurt so good” in the next 28 hours. When traveling cross-country for work (or play for that matter) it is imperative that you accomplish as much as possible, the most affordable way possible, sneak in a little shopping, and attempt to come home with tons of great experiences and new opportunities to share!

Phase one:

Check-in to the LOLA Hotel and head to the Equinox SHOP at Soho.

After retrieving extra boxes of product (made sure there was ample apparel for our EY customers to purchase) from the airport conveyor belt, I caught a cab into Manhattan to check into my hotel at the LOLA.

LOLA, located off Madison and 29th, is a cute, little Art Deco meets Old Hollywood Hotel very reminiscent of a cross between the Standard Hotel and the Thompson Hotel. More importantly, it is right across the street from the Gansvoort Hotel and the Winston (an amazing little Champagne bar).

Once I checked into the Hotel I slept for two hours and then called the SHOP at Soho to make sure all our boxes had arrived.

They had not. So, of course a string of E-mails and feverish phone calls to our corporate office and FEDEX ensued. After realizing that at the SHOP someone had not unlocked the freight door that morning, since it was President’s Day; we finally called the FEDEX driver; found the boxes and I was ready to head over.

The LOLA Hotel

Phase two:

Set-up and Merchandise store for Structured Awareness

As I carried one box and kicked (gently pushed with my foot) the other box to the elevator, down the elevator, out the door, down the stairs; I figured that there was probably a more efficient way to accomplish this task. With my luck (or most likely the strain on my face) a cab immediately pulled over and assisted me.

We were off to 568 Broadway. Of course the entrance is off PRINCE, not Broadway (FYI, do not attempt to enter the building off Broadway, you won’t get in).

I was greeted by a cute, and very refreshing salesman named, Shey. He was eager and willing to help in any way possible. I loved him already.

We re-organized our current stock before we brought out new stock. There wasn’t much left there; a couple tank tops and bolt crop pants.

We opened box after box, filled with Energy Tanks, Bolt Tanks, Midi-bras, Ultra-light Bags, Electric Leggings, Yoga Caps, Electric Mats & Mat Bags, as well as Down Jackets and Vests.

We …

…lined the tables with our Electric Yoga table covers.

…tagged all the merchandise with SKU stickers.

…merchandised the tanks and leggings on the table displays.

…hung the Midi-Bras, Down Vests & Jackets,

…dressed the mannequins in our Energy Tank, Bolt Tank, Leggings, Hottie Shorts, and Down Vests & Jackets.

Made sure to put up our STRUCTURED AWARENESS informational posters!!

We were all ready for some sales… and for the new deepExtreme class the next morning!!

The pose:

I absolutely love this pose. I like it almost as much as my Downward Dog. When I wake up in the morning and do my daily routine I always like to change it up. But, I find myself constantly ending in wheel pose (Urdva Dhanurasana). Once I am in wheel position with both legs firmly planted on the ground for a few moments making sure my chest is pushing to the wall, and my arms are fully extended; I slowly raise my right leg and feel the extension from my toes all the way through to the back of my hamstrings, all the way up my spinal chord, through the top of my head. You may feel a nice tingling sensation, or electricity re-routing itself upwards through your cranium. I repeat the same movement with my right leg down and my left leg extended upwards.

Benefits:

The wheel pose itself improves spinal flexibility, stretches the shoulders & chest, and strengthens the arms. Adding the leg extensions increase flexibility and blood flow throughout the lower extremities and upward through the spine.

Caution:

Be careful when you come out of this pose. Make sure you lower down very slowly while tucking your chin to your chest. Once you’ve reached the floor, keep your knees together and take a nice big breathe; and continue your pranayama into your next position.

Feel free to share pictures of your wheel poses! I love to see other yogi’s and their practices.

Namaste!

I’ve always been very captivated by the way the brain and the body function together as one unit. I highly recommend this book for anyone of any age. Once I started reading it, I just I could not put down. I finished this in 2 days and feel very enlightened from a deeper understanding of how we can improve our existence by exercising this organ that functions as a highly developed muscle. Just like any other muscle of the body it needs to be trained and exercised.

The most hopeful information that I extracted from this book is that the brain can be younger and sharper even with age. Forgetfulness and having a bad memory leads to justifications and excuses that do not correct the problem, unless you take a proactive approach and plan to preserve and improve memory and attention.

There is such beauty in the idea that we can channel our own Electricity in such a way that builds quicker and stronger synapses and neurons. I feel very empowered because I realize I am the master of my brain and the quality of my daily function. You have to take care of your brain just as much, and even more than your physical body. In addition to various memory exercise and identifying specific deficits; eating well, and taking vitamins really improves brain development and creates new neuron function that combats diseases such as Dementia and Alzheimer’s.

Eric Braverman has a wonderful, holistic approach that also includes very simple and scientific explanations so that everyone can understand how the mind works. Get this book…. Now!!! Exercise your mind. Exercise your body. Embrace your Electricity and share it with the world!

xoxo

This is for the Yogi that needs affordable and fun cross training alternatives. Tips to a happy athletic medium that won’t break your wallet.

I’ve been working with Electric Yoga for the passed few months and realized as happy as I am with my weekly Vinyasa Flow and Hot Yoga; my other athletic endeavors have been lacking. As a dancer, martial artist, runner, stuntgirl, I realized that my spiritual and physical well-being needs to include these other activities for balance. Right before I committed myself to this awesome Electric Company (pun intended) my motto was to stick to my “Groupon/Living Social Workout Plan” and stock up on weekly deals and packages.

In my opinion, among the great massages, wine tasting opportunities, and dental appointments at discounted rates that these Sites offer; bundled workout packages to local gyms and athletic activities are educational, exciting, and affordable. You can literally spend $60 and have a pleathora of activities to last you the entire month or more (while working out 2 to 3 times a week). I’ve personally discovered, Zumba (I know I’ve been under a rock), Core Fusion, Treadmill Cross Training, Crossfit, Yoga Sculpt, Sculpt Pilates, Cardio Barre, and Piloxing through the Daily Deals that popped up on both Sites. Once you figure out which activities keep your body cross trained and Zen; you can always move forward and commit to multiple different activities more regularly.

The fact of the matter is, our biological makeup is one that works and excels at it’s highest level when it is constantly forced to adapt and change. For years I was a figure skater, then a basketball player, then a track and field athlete, then a professional dancer, and finally committed to various different activities and Martial Arts to excel in stunts. For overall fitness goals and a well rounded body (not “too” anything) it’s best to switch up activities and keep balance. Yoga keeps my balance, focus and mind/body connection. Whereas, I really love the muscle tone and cardio I receive from things like Core Fusion and Zumba.

Do you ever feel like as much as you love one type of activity, you need a change once in a while?

Well, here’s an inspiring photo of Tara Macken and myself that we shot for one of our new Electric Yoga Campaigns. If anyone knows how to switch it up and stay balanced, it’s Tara. She is one of our EY Electrifiers! Check her out in Hunger Games. She can kick major …… Namaste.
